A record year for the police: over 3,800 new trainees in Austria!

Wien, Österreich - The police schools in Austria are currently experiencing an increase in new trainees. Around 3,800 people are currently enrolled in the two -year basic training. This is shaped by both theoretical and practical phases. A significant proportion of almost a third of the trainees is trained for the Vienna State Police Directorate. The police have increased their strength in recent years, which has led to an increase in the police force by around 3,100 police officers since 2018. While 29,609 police officers were still on duty in 2018, the total number in 2023 is already around 32,700, which is a new record. The proportion of women in the state police directorates is now over 30 percent, while in basic training it even achieves an impressive value of around 40 percent. These values are the result of targeted "female recruiting" measures that aim to promote a balanced gender relationship in the police. It is also noteworthy that more women than men are now working in the administration of the police.

increasing numbers of the training positions

The trend of increasing training numbers is underpinned by introducing a personnel offensive. A remarkable increase in the newly recorded police students was found in March 2024: compared to March 2023, the number rose by around 230 percent. Over 750 new apprenticeships were offered at this cycle, which has been one of the strongest for years. This cycle, for example, exceeds the December turn 2023 by almost 100 places and the cycle in March 2023 by around 530 places. BMI reports that ...

In this context, the proportion of female recorders increases to over 41 percent, which shows a positive tendency. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner expressly points out the need to have sufficient personnel available. In the individual federal states there is a significant increase in the new admissions: Upper Austria rose from 18 to 100, and Lower Austria from 47 to almost 100 new police officers. In Styria, the number of admission climbed from 50 to 136.

modern recruitment and training

The changes in recruitment are partly the result of modern measures. This includes an unbureaucratic, digital application process as part of a one-click process. In addition, an online chat service and social media are used as information and recruiting tools to address potential applicants. Another novelty is that a lack of a driver's license or visible tattoos are no longer a exclusion criterion. Costs for the acquisition of the driver's license and the climate ticket should be reimbursed after the training has been successfully completed.

The basic training is also modernized: new modules, such as in the areas of cybercrime and sport. Technological advances are used by interactive scenarius training with the help of VR glasses. Además, in the first two years of basic training, was introduced to a salary increase that is 140 euros net in the first year and 200 euros net in the second year per month.
