Darmann attacks Karner: Failure for family reunification and security!

Deutschland - On June 22, 2025, Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) will be exposed to sharp criticism by Gernot Darmann, the freedom security spokesman. Darmann accuses Karner of resting on "wrong laurels", especially in view of a decline in family reunification, which, according to Darmann, is only postponed. "The borders are still open, and asylum seekers continue to have access to social benefits," said Darmann, adding that poverty in the country increases and pensioners in particular would be heavily burdened.

In addition, Darmann addressed the poor deportation policy among Karner. He is warning that the illegal migrants in the country could endanger the entire system. Karner reported that 300 Syrians left the country, but Darmann interpreted this as evidence of a persistent migration that could not be seen as a success.

criticism of migration policy

Darmann also described the interior minister as a "security -political rose -decayer". With regard to the so -called "weapons ban zones", he expressed that crime, especially with knives and weapons, could not be contained there. The freedom therefore calls for the resignation of Karner and a return of illegal asylum seekers to their home countries.

In the further context of the migration policy debates, the Federal Government under Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) plans to suspend the family reunification for those beneficiaries of subsidiary for two years. This was decided by a cabinet decision on May 28, 2025. Family reunification had played a central role for subsidiary protectionists, such as Syrian refugees, since it was initially made possible in 2015. But since 2016 the right to family reunification has been largely exposed to this group.

family reunification in the figures

Family reunification was limited to a maximum of 1,000 visas per month in 2018. In 2024, a total of around 120,000 visas were exhibited for the purpose of family reunification of German messages, of which around 28,300 members of people from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq were. In 2024, around 12,000 visas were granted to members of subsidiary persons, which is only a small part of the applications that were submitted in recent years.

Studies show that the separation of family members significantly difficult and causes psychological stress. Around 381,216 people with subsidiary protection are currently living in Germany, with more than half of this group being in the country for over six years. Family reunification is considered by many as an integration policy, since it reduces the concerns about relatives and supports social integration.

The plans for the rest of the family reunification are contradicted to the legal law framework. The European Human Rights Court has decided that a complete suspension of the family of the family is not permitted. States may exclude this after a maximum of two years, but must check in individual cases.

The decline in the number of asylum in Germany is also remarkable. Around 237,000 income was registered in 2024, which represents a decrease of 30 percent compared to the previous year. The main cause is the blocking of the refugee route to Hungary by Serbia in November 2023. Experts and numerous organizations appeal to the federal government to rethink the plans to tighten migration policy and to avoid the lengthy separations of families.
