Darmann demands: asylum stop and immediate deportations in Austria!

Krems, Österreich - On April 29, 2025, FPÖ security spokesman Gernot Darmann expressed sharp criticism of ÖVP Interior Minister Gerhard Karner after the meeting of German-language interior ministers in Krems. Darmann called for more commitment to Karner in the Austrian asylum and security policy and accused the ÖVP to deport responsibility for the asylum problem to the EU. He also criticized politics as a deception of the population.

Darmann's demands include illegal deportations, better border protection and a stop of the asylum seekers. He also made it clear that asylum seekers should not receive citizenship and spoke out for a ban on political Islam. The situation has been tightened by over 250,000 asylum applications since 2020 and an increase in acts of violence, especially in Vienna

Darmann criticizes ingredients of the ÖVP

The FPÖ politician not only criticized the increasing violence and the formation of parallel societies, but also found that the population suffers from the burden of the social system. Seniors experience pension cuts, while the system is overloaded by the high number of asylum applications. Darmann pointed out that the ÖVP did not comply with its promises, such as the stop of the family reunification and return programs to Syria.

In this context, Interior Minister Karner also commented. He emphasized the need to combat illegal migration and spoke out for drastic controls of the Schengen internal borders. At the meeting of the EU Interior Minister in Warsaw, which took place on Thursday, the returns of migrants discussed, among other things. The EU migration commission was dissatisfied with the previous implementation of returns of people who are not allowed to remain in the EU. Karner supported the German proposals to combat illegal migration and called for a more consistent procedure at European level.

New migration and asylum package in the EU

On April 8, 2024, the European Parliament passed a new migration and asylum package to counter the challenges of migration more effectively. These laws aim to revise the Dublin regulations and create a mechanism for sudden climbs by migrants. The regulations, which enable faster processing of asylum applications, were accepted with a majority of 322 to 266 votes and come into force in two years. Mechanisms are also introduced to maintain fundamental rights.

The new rules are intended to ensure that Member States guarantee equivalent standards for the inclusion of asylum seekers. In view of the current discussions about the returns and protection at the EU external borders, it becomes clear that a uniform European approach to coping with the asylum problem is of great importance. While Interior Minister Karner is actively participating in these discussions, it remains to be seen whether this will lead to the urgently needed changes in asylum and migration policy.
