An extraordinary family duel recently attracted attention at the casting of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” (DSDS) in Europa-Park in Rust. At this musical competition, mother Maria Wiesbaum (52) and her daughter Jenny Wiesbaum (19) from Lindau on Lake Constance were on stage - but not together! Instead, everyone competed individually to convince the judges and get to the next round.

Music is an important part of the Wiesbaums' lives. Maria, mother of three, describes herself as a born pop singer. Her daughter Jenny, on the other hand, has a high school diploma and has been singing since she was a child. She has even taken singing lessons and brings a certain amount of experience to the stage. Before things get serious, the jury asks their questions: Dieter Bohlen, Beatrice Egli, Loredana and Pietro Lombardi are excited to see what the two of them will sing.

Jenny Wiesbaum's appearance

Jenny enters the stage first. She chooses the song “Oceans” by Hillsong United, and the jury is initially divided. Bohlen admits that he has difficulty identifying with her performance and claims that she would not make the recall. But while Loredana sees a lot of potential in Jenny, Beatrice Egli also notes that there could be more. In the end, she convinces the jurors: three of them give her a chance for the recall.

Maria Wiesbaum's performance

After Jenny it is her mother Maria's turn. She chooses the classic hit “Que Sera” by Doris Day, which Lombardi also sang in his early days on DSDS. But her performance is not well received by the jury. Lombardi describes it as “not ideal,” and Bohlen is direct: their singing is “without feeling” and not what they need in the competition. With four no votes, Maria's dream of a recall ends abruptly and she returns to Lindau disappointed.

These family dynamics and the competition in the music industry show how different opinions about talent can be. While the daughter was selected for another step into the show, mother Maria unfortunately has to wait for her music career.

How the jury will continue to develop and whether Jenny Wiesbaum can prove herself in the recall remains to be seen. It will be exciting to follow this test and see if other talent from the region appears on the show. You can find out more about this at www.schwaebische.de.
