Rust premiere: Alec Baldwin avoids the film after a tragic incident
The tragic incident on the set of the film “Rust” still has far-reaching effects on everyone involved three years later. The film's premiere recently took place at the Cinemimage festival in Poland, but leading actor Alec Baldwin doesn't want to watch the final version of the film for the time being. In an interview with Variety magazine, the 66-year-old explained: “Not at the moment,” which raises questions for many.
Baldwin, who was involved in the fatal incident, describes the situation as the most difficult he has ever faced. Halyna Hutchins, the camerawoman, was fatally injured in October 2021 by a shot fired from a revolver Baldwin was holding. In addition to Hutchins, the incident also injured director Joel Souza, who was also on set. The involuntary manslaughter trial against Baldwin was unexpectedly dropped in the summer. However, the set's gun master, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was sentenced in April to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter.
Emotional consequences of the incident
Baldwin also opened up about the emotional impact the incident had on his family. "Aside from the victims themselves, what hurts me most is what it did to my wife," Baldwin said. His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, whom he married in 2012, was “very, very traumatized” by the events. Despite the initially harmonious family life, everything was derailed by the incident. “This is very frightening and very disturbing,” Baldwin continued.
The actor and his wife are trying to distance themselves from the “Rust” project. He emphasizes that the film will always be overshadowed by tragedy. In Baldwin's view, the Hutchins story is a great tragedy, and he wishes he could do everything he could to undo what happened. He recalled that before the incident, everyone on the set was happy. It should also be noted that the circumstances that led to reshoots improved the film overall in many ways.
For now, Baldwin wants everything related to “Rust” to disappear before his eyes. "So I can move on to other things and be a [good] father to my children," he added. Considering his age, he wants to devote his remaining energy to his family. The past two years have put a lot of strain on him and he is now urgently looking for a way to free himself from the shadows of the past.
