Markus Hammers Rusterberg 2015: A wine between strength and elegance

in Rust, on Lake Neusiedler in Burgenland, Markus Hammer conjures up special wines that combine both fruit and elegance. His Blaufränkisch Rusterberg 2015 has it all: juicy paired with a potential fireworks display that inspires the senses and invites the wine lovers to search for the perfect sip. This region is often referred to as the “Sea of Viennese”, which may reflect a certain pride in the wine world, but requires a critical view of the actual quality.

Shortly before I was able to sip in one of the last glasses of this year, the inevitable happened: my notebook was affected again by wine ruins. Who would have thought that a glass could end up in a cup of tea in an earlier mishap? With these unfortunate incidents, my technical skills don't seem to be the best while I wrote my notes about the delicious wines.

hammer's special wine philosophy

Markus Hammer has the ability to get keltern in the "in between", i.e. between the poles of the fruit and elegance and at the same time to achieve new heights in the intensity and juicy. He has created his own grade of a third pole that produces interesting wines that collect both inexperienced pleasure drinkers and experts. The powerful flavors of his Rusterberg 2015 ranges from cherry to espresso to a slightly spicy touch of pepper.

The balance between strength and finesse is obvious in this Blaufränkisch. He is not just rustic, but has a specially vulgarity that is the connoisseur. This combination is rare; Hammer succeeds in combining the taste elements with a digestibility that pushes the fat and cumbersome wine styles of the past into the background.

Markus Hammer is not the only talent in the region. Just a few kilometers further in Pellenkirchen, the talented Dorothea Muhr, who is known as Dorli Muhr, also conjures up remarkable wines. Her Blaufränkisch Spitzerberg left my laptop, but also a lasting impression in my memory. Muhr is one of the best winemakers in the country and raises the high standards associated with viticulture in Austria.

The history of wine growing in Carnuntum, where Muhr produces her wines, is closely linked to the region's Roman past. Although it is located in Lower Austria, the wines often taste as if they came directly from Burgenland. This historical background, coupled with modern viticulture techniques, makes the region a hotspot for exceptional wines that are increasingly gaining popularity.

Markus Hammer and Dorli Muhr could not be more different in their styles, but share the ability to create wines that appeal to both the long -established drinkers and the new explorers. The wines of these two winemakers stand for an exciting future of the red wine, which ultimately has the heavy and jamed styles of the past few years behind.

Markus Hammer shows that the world of Blaufränkisch is more than just a nostalgic look back - it is an exciting journey into the future of viticulture. The complex, elegant and yet powerful wines he produces make sure that the grape variety is not forgotten in Blaufränkisch, but continues to exist as an important part of the wine landscape. How will the quality and style of the wines develop in the future? This remains to be seen, whereby niche enjoyment drinkers and mainstream lovers will find their place alike.
