Austria's wine harvesting collapsed: risk of climate for the grapes!
Austria's viticulture is facing a dramatic setback! Wine production fell by shocking 20 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, which presses the harvest to only around 1.9 million hectoliters - the lowest level in 14 years. According to the current figures of the statistics Austria, the decline is particularly due to extremely difficult weather conditions. Late frosts, ruthless drought and massive heavy ranges have added strongly to the winegrowers, as ORF reports.
The white wine sector is particularly affected, in which production fell by 22 percent to around 1.3 million hectoliters. The red wine was also not spared; Here there was a decline from 13 percent to almost 580,000 hectoliters. The slump in Lower Austria with a minus of 23 percent and almost 1.2 million hectoliters. Styria recorded a reduction of 16 percent, while Burgenland is also severely affected to around 500,000 hectoliters at -14 percent, as the data from today.weather chaos and climate change as a trigger
The weather -related effects on the wine harvest are alarming and illustrate the challenges that climate change brings with it. Extreme weather events are increasing and traditional wine -growing areas could become unusable in the future. Winemakers are forced to adapt to these changed conditions and possibly try out new grape varieties or cultivation methods. However, the preservation of wine quality could suffer significantly from the more frequent heat waves and unexpected cold periods.
The upcoming harvest forecasts are anything but optimistic. The Chamber of Agriculture had expected a harvest of around two million hectoliters last year, but the actual harvest remained disappointing. With these developments, not only the future of Austrian wine is at stake, but also the cultural heritage of a country where wine is an important part of society, as the current events make clear.
