Dispute over delicacies: ÖVP and SPÖ in culinary power struggle
The political landscape in the Oberwart municipal council has changed noticeably after the normally harmonious gatherings resulted in a sharp exchange about who is responsible for last year's delicacy day. At this event, which took place on September 20, culinary delights, fashion and musical performances were in the foreground. Initially, the organization was not without resistance, especially on the part of the ÖVP.
Hans Peter Hadek, municipal council and deputy city party chairman of the ÖVP, expresses his dissatisfaction with the SPÖ. "The claim that we had to be convinced is simply unsustainable," said Hadek. He underlines that the implementation of the day was shaped by a collaboration between the municipality, the courtyard and the catering instinct and was not due to the initiative of the SPÖ.
discrepancies between the parties
The mayor Georg Rosner expresses similar concerns. He makes it clear that the planning by the informal events company, led by Ute Portschy, was coordinated and the SPÖ cannot make an order. "It seems to me that this could soon go into the state election campaign. We see the SPÖ in the light and in the dark, which is inappropriate for the citizens," said Rosner. This argument shows how strong the pressure is within the political ranks.
Michael Leitgeb, Vice Mayor of the SPÖ, countered the allegations: "We have developed the event in the committee and made the necessary decisions." He is surprised that the ÖVP tries to give the impression that it is responsible for the delicacy day. The sharp change of words between the political representatives reflect the deeper cracks between the parties that extend through the organization of public events.
A common goal is shared by everyone involved: the revival of the city center, which is promoted by such events. Despite the disputes, both sides now seem to be challenged to find a uniform line in order to be able to offer the citizens an appealing event.
