Walter Sieberer: The master of the crib building from Gols

in Gols, where winter is in full swing, the retired financial advisor Walter Sieberer lives and works. He has created impressive hundreds of Christmas cribs over the past ten years. While the largest Christmas crib in the world is being built on the seaside stage in Mörbisch at the same time, Sieberer shows that the Tradition of the Christmas crib can be lived on with craftsmanship and a lot of passion. His goal is to delight people with their creations. Every time someone looks at their cribs, it brings a smile on their face, according to the artist.

Sieberers fascination for craft started in his youth. As a child, he built model cars and aircraft, which sparked his interest in creative projects. But before he devoted himself to the Christmas crib, he also worked as a building owner and built two houses. As the old saying says, he left the house for his enemy with a wink; But when building cribs, peace is in the foreground.

the origin of the crib

The tradition of the Christmas crib goes far back and has its roots in the early Christian period. It is often associated with St. Franz von Assisi, who built up a crib near his monastery in Greccio to bring the miracle of the birth of Jesus closer to the villagers. With a living ox and a donkey, he tried to bring the atmosphere and meaning of the Holy Night to life. From that moment on he became known as the "father of the Christmas crib".

elements of a crib

When making Christmas cribs, there are crucial elements that should not be missing. Regardless of the cultural selection - be it an oriental crib or a traditional Alpine crib with a reed roof - the focus is always on the Jesukind. The Heideboden nativity club in Frauenkirchen, which Walter Sieberer also belongs to, is devoted to this art with a lot of passion. Every year the members proudly present their work on different Christmas markets. He built Sieberer's first crib after a book that his family had given him, and she is now standing in the Gols municipal office. Last year the Krippenbauer Association in Kittsee Castle exhibited a box crib that is scenes from South Tyrol.

special crib scenes

A remarkable creation is a all -year crib that represents scenes from the life of Jesus and was created by the Frauenkirchen crib farmers. This shows, for example, the event in which Maria and Josef - on their trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem - are looking for accommodation. When the contractions are used and no hostel is available, Jesus' birth occurs in a stable.

Walter Sieberer organizes a house crib exhibition on December 6th, from 3:00 p.m., at Sportplatzgasse 14 in Gols. In addition, the members of the crib club show their works on 29/30. November at the Advent magic on Golser Hauptplatz and at the Kittseer Advent in the castle on 7./8. December.

the largest and the smallest crib

In contrast to the manageable works of art by Sieberer, the huge Christmas crib in Mörbisch is in its own league - it is the largest of its kind worldwide. On the other hand, there is also a tiny crib that is not larger than a 5 cent piece and is housed in a hazelnut shell. This special miniature crib comes from a crib builder from Baden-Württemberg and shows how versatile and impressive this tradition is.

Walter Sieberer's commitment to building cribs shows how deep the roots of this tradition are enough and how exciting it is for many people. The craft is not only part of his hobby, but also a sign of creativity, friendship and the spirit of Christmas.
