Last Saturday there was a solemn ceremony at the military training area in Bruckneudorf. Colonel Peter Krauss handed over the command of the Burgenland hunter battalion to Lieutenant Colonel Werner Winkler. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner took part in the ceremony and paid tribute to the importance of the battalion for the security of Austria.
"This battalion is an important part of our national defense and makes an indispensable contribution to security in Austria," explained Tanner. She emphasized that at a time when the world situation has become more uncertain, the role of the militia is gaining in importance. Minister Tanner also thanked Colonel Krauss for his long and responsible leadership.
Details about the handover and the new commander
Colonel Krauss, who has headed Burgenland hunter battalion since 2006, handed over the battalion field sign in the Benedek barracks at the ceremony. The new commander, lieutenant colonel Werner Winkler, has had a long military career. In 1987 he joined the then Landwehr regular regiment 11 in Neusiedl am See in 1987 and later served in hunter regiment 11 and at the press and information service in the Ministry of Defense.
After his time in the military, Winkler worked in the private sector, where he proved himself in personnel management, organization and marketing. He was also active as a management consultant for many years. Since the foundation of the Burgenland hunter battalion in 2006, he had held the position of deputy battalion commander. Winkler is also the father of a daughter.
The Burgenland hunter battalion, stationed in southern Burgenland, looks back on a long history that goes back to the former territorial militia battalions 43 and 1. It combines civilian qualifications with military training. The soldiers are mostly from the federal states of Burgenland, Vienna, Styria and Lower Austria and willing to be ready for both national and international operations.
The main order of the hunter battalion is military national defense. In order to do justice to this order, the battalion usually carries out militia exercises every two years. It works closely with the hunter battalion 19 from Güssing.
In addition, the Jägerbataillon Burgenland maintains close partnerships with Helvetia Insurance AG and the four municipalities of the Lafnitztal: Grafenschachen, Loipersdorf-Kitzladen, Neustift at Lafnitz and Markt Allhau. This cooperation underlines networking between the military and the civilian population.
The hunter battalion not only has an important military function, but is also part of the social structure in the region. The handover of the command marks a change that brings hope for a continued successful and responsible management of the battalion. The new commander, Lieutenant Colonel Winkler, can fall back on numerous experiences from his long career, which will be useful in his new role.
