Callback of 28 million bottles: Coca-Cola relies on sustainability

At the end of October, Coca-Cola carried out an extensive recall campaign in which 28 million bottles of certain lemonade were brought back to Edelstal. This step was necessary after a broken sieve was discovered in the production facility that could let the metal splinters get into the drinks. The affected products include 0.5 liters of PET bottles of the Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Mezzomix brands, which have a best-before date between February 04, 2025 and April 12, 2025 and are marked with the coding "WP".

The recall campaign was ordered as a pure precaution in close coordination with the Austrian authorities. Coca-Cola emphasizes that after a detailed risk assessment, you have decided to make a sustainable disposal of recalls. This is intended to help prevent possible risks for consumers.

sustainable disposal

The called PET bottles are now “disposed of” in the work in Edelstal. The plans provide to use the liquids in cooperation with a waste disposal company for biogas production. The process is used to gain biogas from waste materials, which is an environmentally friendly alternative. This could be a step towards more sustainable use of resources.

"After validating all handling options and a comprehensive risk assessment, we decided to dispose of all affected products for safety reasons as sustainably as possible," the company said in an official letter. In addition, the collected bottles are to be recycled in the standard process for PET recycling.

The Situation around the return action shows the responsibility of Coca-Cola towards its customers and the environment. With this measure, the company would like to clarify that the security of consumers has a top priority.
