Neusiedler See exceeds annual average thanks to heavy rain
With a current water level of 115.40 meters over Adria, Lake Neusiedler exceeded the historically usual marking for this season on Friday. According to the information from the Water portal of the Burgenland state government, this value is considered gratifying, since it is remarkable compared to the low levels of recent years. The situation in 2022 was particularly striking, in which the lowest status was recorded at only 114.90 meters since 1965, while in 2023 only 115.01 meters were reached.
At the beginning of 2024, the lake was already in the level. Already on June 20, the long -standing fund of 115.52 meters was temporarily reached. Although the country suffered from a heat period, the water level recovered and allowed a continuously active water sports season. The past year was a challenge with its deep water levels, but this was far exceeded by this year's conditions.
causes of the increase
The crucial turn came with the heavy rains in September, which led to considerable flood damage in many regions. In the case of Lake Neusiedler, these weather phenomena also contributed to lifting the level by more than ten centimeters. The new precipitation ensured that the water level has now exceeded the long -term average since 1965. Compared to the previous years, there is a drastic improvement: in 2022 there were still 50 centimeters for the mean and in 2023 it was a deficit of 40 centimeters. The last time at which the water level was above the average was in May 2019.
This development is welcomed not only by the residents, but also by the water sports enthusiasts, which now find more suitable conditions. The decline as a result of the hot summer fluctuations took place, but the water was available for the entire season to enable different activities.
The precipitation from September and the subsequent rains show how the weather in Burgenland can also take unpredictable but positive twists. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the weather conditions will develop in the coming months and how stable the water level of the Neusiedler See will remain. In this sense, the focus remains on the future weather influences and their effective importance for the water balance of this important water region. More information about the water levels can be found in a current report according to M.BVZ.at .
