Large construction projects in Güssing: Cultural Center is modernized

The cultural center in Güssing, a building with a historical charm, is currently being converted into a modern event location. The extensive renovation work began after the citizens had clearly voted for a renovation in 2021 in a referendum. With this decision, a new era opened for the listed building, which should now create all the prerequisites for a modern event experience.

The construction machines are diligently at work and the landscape changes are already visible. Since the cultural center was built in brutalism style, a careful planning process had to be passed through the Burgenland state real estate in order to observe all monument law requirements. Jutta Benedek, the managing director of the state real estate, explained that in addition to maintaining the facade, numerous interior of the old structure should also be preserved. This is a central point because many hang on the preserved atmosphere of the house in the community.

planned use and cost estimate

The new cultural center will offer various possible uses. The old ballroom with 500 seats is preserved, while space for 400 visitors is created in a newly created hall that is created from the roof of the courtyard. In addition, an outdoor stage with an extendable grandstand is planned on the back of the KUZ, which can accommodate an additional 500 people. This variety of event locations should offer cultural initiatives and associations space to live out creatively and offer their programs.

The planned costs for the project amount to around 23 million euros, and it is sought to keep this sum within the framework of the budget. The completion and opening of the new cultural center are therefore planned for the turn of 2025/2026. The renovation promises not only to promote the cultural aspect, but also to strengthen and bring together the local community.
