Education policy under pressure: Every third child threatens to fail!
In Upper Austria, a worrying trend is emerging: More and more young people leave the education system without gaining a qualifying conclusion. According to information from ots 29-year-olds in the region a compulsory school leaving certificate as the highest completed training. These statistics illustrate the challenges in education.
An alarming factor is that about 25% of 15 to 16 year olds at the end of the compulsory school are unable to read in a meaningful way. This has serious consequences: those affected often struggle with difficulties in the educational path, can often be found in poorly paid jobs, are unemployed longer and have a lower social participation. In order to reverse these developments, the Chamber of Labor in Upper Austria calls for effective measures to increase the level of education.
urgent need for action
The systematic problems in the education system cannot be overlooked. AK Upper Austria has found in its educational monitor that the proportion of young people who are not in any training is constantly increasing. The dropout rate in apprenticeship training is currently around 22%, which is considered a partial failure of the educational system. In order to counteract this, the AK stipulates that at least half of the affected young adults should be brought back into further training. This group is also more often affected by long -lasting unemployment.
The shortcomings in education are also reflected in the social structures. In this way, educational success depends heavily on the social status of the parents. Only 10% of the students: Inside families with low social status, high levels of competence at the end of the compulsory school. In order to promote equal opportunities, the AK calls for a legal right to a free place in a child education and support facility from the age of second and access to free all -day schools.
important investments in early childhood education
Investments in early childhood education are crucial to avoid abortions. In Upper Austria, only 6.4% of children under three years of age have access to crawling rooms or kindergartens that enable full -time work. In this context, a reduction in group sizes in kindergartens was agreed by 2028/29 to improve the quality of education and working conditions.
With the AK chances index, which the Chamber of Labor has recently developed, schools are enabled to use means to promote language and reading as well as social work. These measures are necessary to increase the social permeability of the education system, because origin, migration status and first language play a crucial role in educational success.
Financial framework and educational offers
The financing of the Austrian educational system is also criticized. The current educational expenditure statistics show that Austria invests less in early childhood education compared to other EU countries. According to the data of Statistics Austria should be increased in order to cope with the challenges in the education sector.
Against this background, it is of crucial importance that the educational policy measures are focused on the prevention of dropouts and at the same time creates opportunities for catching up. This could be done by STREGTHS-based qualification models and through increased initiatives for career and educational orientation.Overall, it can be seen that the need for action in education is significantly larger than previously assumed. AK Upper Austria appeals to those responsible to react promptly and comprehensively in order to sustainably improve the educational opportunities for all young people in the region.
