Berg drama in Matrei: 26-year-old falls 80 meters and is saved!

Matrei in Osttirol, Österreich - On July 11, 2025 at 9:00 a.m., an eight -member group from the Czech Republic broke out from the Matreier Tauernhaus to the Badener Hütte, which is located at an altitude of 2,608 meters. Due to the difficult weather conditions, which were characterized by snowfall in the previous days, the climb turned out to be challenging. Despite the adverse circumstances and the changeable weather, the group reached the Wildenkogel Scharte around 4:00 p.m.

Some members of the group were very exhausted, which is why the decision was ultimately made to return to the Tauernhaus. However, there was a serious accident during the descent: a 26-year-old climber lost the hold at about 2,390 meters and crashed 70 to 80 meters through rock-well-served terrain. Their injuries were serious.

First aid and rescue action

In the group, there were also several doctors who immediately provided first aid and made an emergency call to request professional support. An emergency helicopter was immediately sent to the scene of the accident to rescue the seriously injured mountaineer. She was flown to the Tauernklinikum Zell am See after the crash recovery.

The other seven members of the group suffered shock during the incident and were physically exhausted. Therefore, an additional evacuation by a police helicopter was necessary to get it safely into the valley. The Matrei mountain rescue was also in use and supported the rescue measures.

context of similar cases

The accident in East Tyrol is part of a series of serious accidents in the Alps in the past few weeks. On July 7, 2025, for example, several climbers had come into an emergency in the Wilder Kaiser after a climbing tour, while on the same day a 24-year-old died at the Watzes tip after a 200-meter crash. Such incidents illustrate the risks of mountaineering, especially in times of changeable weather conditions.

The current situation not only shows the dangers that climbers are exposed in high alpine regions, but also underlines the importance of the rapid reaction of rescue teams. Such operations, such as the recent rescue of the Czech group, are elaborate and risky undertakings that often require daring and decisive measures.

In view of the incidents, it is essential for mountaineers to always pay attention to the weather conditions and their physical condition and, if in doubt, refrain from mountain tours so as not to endanger their safety.
