Baumgartner tragedy: New التفair for his fatal paraglider crash!

The tragedy about the fatal crash of the 56-year-old paraglider Baumgartner in Fermo increasingly raises questions. According to the public prosecutor, he died through the impact. The autopsy was carried out on Tuesday after a first examination on Friday, but the official result is still pending. So far, prosecutor Raffaele Iannella has not commented on the publication of the result and made it clear that the investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident continued.

Special attention applies to the technical report, which should bring clarification about possible problems with the paraglider or the engine. The publication of the report is expected in a period of one to two months. In the examination, forensic doctors found injuries to the spine and a severing of the spinal cord. These are critical evidence that indicate the serious consequences of the accident.

Investigations and eyewitness reports

The investigation also deals with the evaluation of the deceased's bodycam. Eyewitnesses reported that Baumgartner tried to open the rescue parachute shortly before the crash, which he did not succeed. The first reconstructions indicate that he had attached a camera to his engine slide shield. This camera was attached with a small cord and could have got into the propeller by an abrupt flight movement. Such a mishap could ultimately have led to the collapse of the sail and the fatal crash of the aircraft.

The region around Porto Sant’elpidio, where Baumgartner's paraglider crashed into a swimming pool area, is known for its glowing summer, which attracts many paragliders. Paragliding is increasingly becoming popular in Germany: the number of members of the German paraglider and dragon flight association developed from almost 20,000 members in 1997 to 36,000 in 2018. The accident statistics from 2018 counted over 200 accidents, more than 100 with serious injuries. This shows that despite the fascination for this sport there are also risks.

The fascination and the risks of paragliding

Marion Wohlhaupter, an experienced paragliding pilot, describes her passion for this hobby that she has accompanied since childhood. Despite the risks, the stimulus of paragliding is undisputed and attracts many enthusiastic athletes. This includes pleasure flyers that only fly in ideal conditions, route pilots who want to cover wide distances, as well as acrobats that show impressive maneuvers in the air.

The training as a paraglider requires patience, self -control and conscientiousness. Beginners first learn the handling of the screen on meadows and hanging. It is important to bring physical fitness with you in order to be able to fly safely. The cost of sport is variable: While rail prices are 15 euros per trip, the equipment costs for a belt are around 850 euros and for a paraglider between 2,500 and 6,000 euros. Many flight schools also offer the opportunity to borrow the equipment.

In view of the current events, it becomes clear that paragliding, despite its risks, exerts great attraction. Ultimately, there is hope that the results of the investigation will clarify many open questions and that such tragic accidents can be avoided in the future.
