Activists start protest convoy to Egypt: Call to solidarity with Gaza!

hundreds of activists started in Tunisia today to protest against the continuing attacks of Israel as part of the Gaza War. The convoy calls "all free people worldwide" to support the Palestinians. Spokesman Wael Nawar explained that the trip through several cities in Tunisia, then to Libya, ادامه to Egypt and finally to Rafah. This border crossing is over 3,000 kilometers from Tunis and is the only one who is not controlled by Israel.

Currently the border crossing Rafah is closed. This contributes to tightening the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, which is tightened by Israeli control and the closure of important escape routes for humans and goods. According to reports, Israel conquered the border crossing a few days ago, which further deteriorates the humanitarian conditions. The reports on ethnic cleansing and massive destruction in Gaza, which are documented by doctors without limits, are particularly worrying.

protests and support campaigns

Another part of the protest consists of activists who plan to walk to the border crossing. This action begins at the same time with the convoy from Tunisia. In Cairo, activists have already gathered to break off Al-Arish towards Rafah. However, it remains unclear whether the Egyptian authorities will allow this foot action.

The situation in the Gaza Strip is extremely critical. Since the beginning of the conflict on October 7, 2023, when Hamas started an attack on Israel, more than 54,000 Palestinian fatalities have been registered. Israel reacted with massive air raids that have led to a humanitarian crisis. Doctors without limits warn that access to medical care is severely restricted and that many people are pushed into smaller areas due to the ongoing bombing.

Humanitarian location in the Gaza Strip

The closure of the border crossing Rafah has also brought the delivery of relief goods to a standstill, which still tightens the catastrophic conditions for the civilian population. Wael Abu Omar, a former media manager at the border crossing, describes the border as a "life anchor" for humanitarian aid and the movement of people. The continuing military actions have forced many people to leave their home while negotiations on a ceasefire have so far failed.

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip remains a central topic that requires international attention. Doctors without borders require an immediate end of the displacement of the civilian population and an end to attacks on medical facilities. International engagement is considered essential to improve the humanitarian situation in the region.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the convoy and its activities under the seaside blockade will not be supported after Greta Thunberg and other activists had been stopped with an auxiliary ship. The international community faces the challenge to react to the problems in Gaza and the associated humanitarian requirements.
