Tragic end for Hirscher and Holzmann: Injuries end the season!
There is currently great consternation in alpine skiing because two prominent athletes had to end their seasons early. The eight-time overall ski World Cup winner Marcel Hirscher suffered a severe cruciate ligament tear during training on the Reiteralm. The 35-year-old from Salzburg has already undergone an operation that was successful. “Cruciate ligament gone, project over!” commented Hirscher, who will now also miss the World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. After his comeback, which he celebrated after a five-year break, Hirscher had high hopes. But after an unfortunate slip-up in training, the season has now abruptly ended and Hirscher has to devote himself to a comprehensive rehabilitation treatment. “It's a horrible feeling,” says Hirscher, who still doesn't want to lose his love for skiing. His experienced colleagues, including Lindsey Vonn and Felix Neureuther, are deeply affected by the news and send their well-wishes.
Second drama in skiing
But that's not all: German slalom specialist Sebastian Holzmann, number two in the German team, also suffered a torn cruciate ligament during training. The 31-year-old, who is one of the best slalom skiers in Germany, had to undergo surgery on the same day. On Instagram, Holzmann expressed his sadness over the injury and explained that it was a nightmare come true for him. Despite the defeat, he shows fighting spirit: “Giving up is not an option!” His injury comes at a bad time, as the season didn't start well for Holzmann and he wasn't able to collect any World Cup points in several races. How chiemgau24.de reports, Holzmann's failure is a hard blow for the small German slalom team, which is now hoping for a difficult rehabilitation phase.
The injury-related setbacks for Hirscher and Holzmann show the injury-prone nature of skiing and create a sombre mood among fans. The hopes of a successful comeback for the two athletes remain uncertain.
