Container ship hits coast near residential building: residents in danger!
On May 22, 2025, the 135 meter long container ship “NCL Salten” ran aground in the Trondheimfjord near Byneset, Norway, for reasons that are still unclear. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when local resident Johan Helberg was woken up by loud noises. His neighbors had alerted him, and when he looked out the window he saw the bow of the ship just a few meters from his home. Vol.at reports that fortunately the building remained undamaged with the exception of a damaged heat pump pipe. If the ship had traveled just five meters to the right, it could have caused significant damage to the house.
The area's fishermen and boatmen were worried by the incident, but there were no injuries and no oil spill was feared. The shipping company NCL, represented by Bente Hetland, has started investigations to clarify the accident. The Norwegian police assume that the officer responsible may have fallen asleep on the ship's bridge. Tagesschau.de reported that the officer, a man between the ages of 30 and 40 from Ukraine, was not the captain of the ship but held an officer rank.
Salvage is successful
The ship was successfully salvaged on Tuesday morning, a few days after the incident. The rescue work went better than expected. Over the weekend and on Monday, over 1,000 tons of cargo have already been brought ashore from the ship. Vol.at In the future, the “NCL Salten” is scheduled to enter a nearby port to carry out a detailed examination of the damage.
The history of the ship and its accidents is not without precedent. Such incidents are documented in the lists of shipping disasters, although the causes are often technical or weather-related. The term “accident” sometimes obscures the possible causes, which in some cases were intentional. Wikipedia clarifies that very serious maritime accidents are often associated with the total loss of the ship or significant water pollution.
The recovery of the “NCL Salten” is therefore a stroke of luck, both for the residents and for the shipping company. However, the incident has also brought renewed attention to the need for stricter security measures at sea.
