Students in Serbia ask churches to support!

Belgrad, Serbien - On March 14, 2025, Serbia's students addressed an urgent appeal to the country's religious communities. They ask them to stand behind the protests of the government opponents. In a letter quoted by Serbian media, the students ask the management of the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant churches as well as the Muslim community, "to be at the side of people" and to support the principles of truth and justice. This is particularly relevant, as massive protests against the government of President Aleksandar Vucic are expected again next weekend in Belgrade, as KathPress reports.

The resentment against the government has been noticeable for months, especially after the tragic station accident in Novi Sad in November, in which 15 people died. Critics see the misfortune primarily corruption and sloppy construction work that led to the catastrophe. The tensions in the country led to the announcement of the government's resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic at the end of January. The tense political situation mobilizes the citizens and allows resistance to the current state leadership. The Thomauchhack, as the protests are also called, is an expression of the striving for a democratic fresh start, as the Heinrich Böll Foundation states.

mass protests on weekends

The upcoming protests have the potential to change the political landscape of Serbia sustainably. In view of the current challenges, the students and the general population could unite to stand up for their demands. The use of the churches for peace and justice could make a decisive contribution to supporting the protest movement and promoting a peaceful solution to the conflicts that are currently burdening the country. The coming days will be crucial for development in Serbia, and all eyes are aimed at Belgrade, where thousands of citizens will go back to the streets.
