The Swedish Princess Sofia celebrates her 40th birthday today, but there is no big celebration! Heavily pregnant and ready to give birth to her fourth child in February 2025, she has downsized her birthday party. As the court confirmed in an official announcement, lavish celebrations had to be canceled as a result of her pregnancy. Margareta Thorgren, court spokeswoman, told “Svensk Damtidning”: “The birthday is celebrated privately,” which makes the simple focus clear.
Normally a big birthday would be celebrated lavishly, but circumstances force Princess Sofia to celebrate in a small circle with close friends and family. In an interview with Vogue, she openly admitted that she and her husband, Prince Carl Philip, had originally not planned to have any more children after the birth of their three sons. Nevertheless, they are happy about the coming baby and describe it as a “good number” - a decision that suddenly presents them with the choice between a big celebration and withdrawal.
A majestic celebration on a small scale
The anticipation of the baby is palpable. Prince Carl Philip and Sofia already have three sons: Alexander (8), Gabriel (7) and Julian (3). The new child will be King Carl XVI's ninth grandchild. But despite the royal connection, the upcoming baby will not officially be part of the family, as King Carl Gustaf decided in 2019 that some of his grandchildren no longer have to represent royals.
