Post office shock in St. Florian: Unimarkt closes and post partner goes away!

In a shocking turn of events for the residents of St. Florian near Linz, the popular university market has closed its doors at the end of the year. This news hit the 6,300 residents like a bolt from the blue, as rumors about the impending closure of the supermarket were already doing the rounds in the summer. Mayor Bernd Schützeneder confirmed that the closure not only affects the local supplier, but also the market's postal partner, which makes the situation even more difficult. As already mentioned in a report by MeinBezirk on November 29th, the closure of the university market and thus the postal partner was decided without the community being sufficiently informed in advance. This means that the nearest post office is now in the town of Enns, around ten kilometers away, which is all the more frustrating for many residents.

Economic reasons for the closure

According to a statement from Unimarkt, the reasons for the immediate change of location were the “enormous density of competition” and a changing purchasing behavior of consumers, who increasingly prefer regional and high-quality products. These challenges made it difficult to operate the market profitably. Although there were plans to continue operating the university market through a franchisee, management ultimately decided against this option and in favor of closing it, as the mayor opposite Today confirmed.

The closure has already sparked lively discussions on social media. Some residents criticized the fact that even smaller neighboring communities like Hargelsberg have a post office, while St. Florian now has to make do without one. Schützeneder expressed the hope that a new postal partner could soon be found and was actively looking for solutions to continue to guarantee residents a postal connection, as stated in the report MyDistrict can be read. It remains exciting to see how the situation in the community will develop and when residents can finally expect a postal service provider in their area again.
