Youth protection in focus: nicotine pouch test purchases in Tyrol are proving successful!

In Tyrol, 35 shops were checked for compliance with the ban on nicotine pouches. These test purchases took place between December 4th and 22nd and brought sobering results: in only two cases did the specially trained young test buyers manage to purchase the coveted products, while in 33 other attempts they were turned away.* ORF reported that the control is part of a package of measures aimed at preventing the consumption of harmful products among young people. Last year, Tyrol's youth law extended the ban to the purchase and consumption of nicotine pouches, which pose comparable risks to classic tobacco products.*

Hidden dangers of nicotine pouches

The so-called snus or nicotine pouches are controversial in the tobacco industry. These small packets, which deliver nicotine through the oral mucosa, are becoming increasingly popular, especially among young people, because they can be consumed inconspicuously. According to that Deutschlandfunk, they can increase the risk of severe addiction as a single pouch can contain the nicotine content of up to six cigarettes. Experts warn of the possible consequences of poisoning, which can range from nausea to fainting. In addition, consumption on social media is propagated by athletes, which further fuels its spread among young people.*

The Tyrolean authorities are aware of the challenge facing the regulation of such products. Youth State Councilor Astrid Mair welcomed the test results and emphasized the need for education and prevention in order to strengthen youth protection. With a clear focus on protecting the younger generation, addiction doctors are calling for the introduction of stricter guidelines and broader education about the risks of these new stimulants.*
