Israel's air strikes: Iran under fire - chaos in Tehran after escalation!
Israeli fighter jets destroyed Iran's internal security headquarters today in an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, this military operation represents a significant blow against "the Iranian dictator's main arm of oppression." Israeli forces reported attacks on military targets in Tehran, causing thousands of people to flee the city and other major Iranian cities.
Fifty Israeli fighter jets reportedly attacked about 20 strategic targets in Tehran, including a centrifuge production facility used to enrich uranium for possible nuclear weapons. The Israeli military aims to weaken Iran's military capacity while alerting international nuclear watchdogs to what is happening. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), two centrifuge production sites were among the targets, including a workshop in Karaj.
Attacks and reactions
In the wake of the airstrikes, there were reports of major traffic congestion and disrupted connections in Tehran and the surrounding area. Iran responded by firing about 30 ballistic missiles in two salvos at Israel, but most of those missiles were intercepted without causing any injuries. Israeli attacks have already resulted in 24 deaths and more than 800 injuries since the conflict began in Israel.
On the Iranian side, the human rights network HRANA reports at least 585 dead and over 1,300 injured, including at least 239 civilians. In a further step, the population of the southwestern part of Tehran was called upon to evacuate in order to enable military attacks.
International reactions
Given the escalating violence, states around the world are calling on both Israel and Iran to stop the attacks and seek diplomatic solutions. The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, commented on the Israeli military strikes and urged both sides to avoid escalation. Merz previously had talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. Germany has also issued a stricter travel warning for the Middle East and is calling on German citizens in Israel, Iran and Gaza to register on the ELEFAND crisis preparedness list.
International leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have also called for restraint. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte criticized the Israeli attack as one-sided and called for the need for de-escalation measures. In particular, it is emphasized that attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities should be avoided in order to prevent the situation from further deteriorating.
Amid these tensions, it emerged that the Israeli army confirmed the downing of one of its drones by Iranian air defenses. Israeli media reports of clashes in Rey and further unrest, which further exacerbates the tense situation.
While the aggression continues, the situation remains volatile and international efforts to mediate a solution are critical to prevent the conflict from escalating.
