Wolfenbüttel Tafel looks back on an eventful year: thanks to helpers!

The DRK district association in Wolfenbüttel has had a challenging year, marked by a massive increase in customers, especially due to the influx of refugees. Frederike Schwieger, who has recently taken over the full-time management of the Tafel, emphasizes that without the support of volunteers, companies and donors, the Tafel 2024 would not have been able to work so successfully. “Before Christmas we thanked everyone who helped us,” she says. The move to larger premises in the Löwentor was a crucial measure to meet the requirements. These changes not only brought with them logistical challenges, but also an increase in the number of people cared for to over 2,300. These developments highlight the need for a solid organizational structure.

New challenges and responsibility

Frederike Schwieger has only been in her new position for three weeks and sees great potential for the positive further development of the Tafel. Since joining the DRK in March 2020, she has held various responsible positions, most recently as head of refugee aid. “The need for living space is huge, which is why we primarily accommodate refugees from Syria in our emergency accommodation,” explains the 29-year-old. The food bank is not only seen as a distribution point for food, but also as a central contact point for those seeking help, which puts the focus on resource-saving use and the promotion of volunteers. Schwieger is determined to tackle these new tasks with passion and commitment.
