Russia attacks Ukraine: massive air strikes on energy facilities!
The decisive developments on 1,024. Day of the Russia-Ukraine War.
On Saturday, December 14th, a storm of violence swept across Ukraine! Russian forces have launched a massive air offensive targeting Ukrainian energy facilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of one of the biggest attacks on the already struggling power grid and stressed how urgently Kiev needs more Western support before there can be peace with Russia.
The numbers are alarming: according to the Ukrainian energy company DTEK, Moscow fired at least 93 rockets that caused “severe damage” to power plants. A devastating blow to the Ukrainian infrastructure!
Counterattacks and destruction
But Ukraine strikes back! Ukrainian drones attacked an infrastructure target in the central Russian region of Oryol, causing a fire and breaking windows in nearby houses, regional governor Andrei Klychkov reported. In the Krasnodar region, Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defense systems, with one drone breaking windows in a village, but fortunately no injuries were reported.
However, Russian defensive measures were not always successful. Seven Ukrainian drones were shot down in Bryansk, on the northern border with Ukraine, Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed. And in the Belgorod region, Ukrainian forces attacked two villages, injuring a resident and starting a fire in a house that was quickly extinguished.
Political maneuvers and international reactions
The political waves are rising! The Kremlin praised US President-elect Donald Trump for criticizing Ukrainian missile attacks on Russian territory. But the discussion about sending European troops to ensure peace in Ukraine is still premature, according to the Russian authorities.
Amid these tensions, the US has announced a new $500 million military aid package for Ukraine, as Washington rushes to support Kiev ahead of Trump's inauguration. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the possibility of foreign troops in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, but stressed that Warsaw is not planning such measures.
Zelensky will attend a meeting with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the European Union and NATO in Brussels next week to discuss support for his country. And meanwhile, the EU plans to impose sanctions on Russian intelligence agents on Monday over “hybrid” attacks against the bloc.
The situation remains tense as the conflict continues to escalate and the world watches, transfixed. Ukraine, a global producer of grains and oilseeds, is poised to deliver food to Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, while Russian and Syrian sources report that wheat shipments from Russia have been suspended due to uncertainties over the new government and payment delays.
In another dramatic move, a woman in Ukraine was sentenced to 14 years in prison for collaborating with Russian intelligence to create fake reports that sought to justify Moscow's invasion. Several people suspected of being Russian spies and undermining Ukrainian security were also arrested.
