Nostalgic trip on a steam train: anniversary event in Grünstadt and Eisenberg!

The Eistalbahn will experience a special event on October 13, 2024: on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its reactivation and the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle, a nostalgic train will be put into operation. The Rhineland-Palatinate South Public Transport Association has come up with something special. On this day there will be shuttle rides on a historic steam train between Grünstadt, Eisenberg and the Eiswoog. At the same time, there is a street food festival in Grünstadt, complemented by a shopping Sunday, which makes the small town a showcase for regional delicacies.

The steam locomotive 58 311 from the Ulm Railway Friends is used for the journeys. This is accompanied by three historic passenger cars: two express train cars from the 1930s and a local passenger car from the 1960s. Since there is no track at Eiswoog to bypass the train, a V 100 series diesel locomotive from 1961 is also used. In this way, the nostalgia of steam operation remains unbroken.

Travel times and routes

The shuttle trips are scheduled for different departure times in Grünstadt: 8:10 a.m., 10:20 a.m., 1:20 p.m., 3:10 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. There are also trips from Eiswoog, these are scheduled for 9:15 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 4:20 p.m. and 5:55 p.m. An additional connection between Eiswoog and Eisenberg takes place at 11:15 a.m., the return journey takes place at 12:00 p.m. Water refills for the steam locomotive in Eisenberg are planned, including during a stop between 11:25 and 11:50 a.m.

In addition, a DB Regio diesel multiple unit runs alternately with the steam train, so that a train serves the route approximately every hour. The exact timetable is available in the DB Navigator and can be accessed on paper for use.

Operational challenges in Eisenberg

In Eisenberg in particular, passengers have to pay attention to a special operational situation. Trains from the direction of Eiswoog are only allowed to travel to the eastern platform once the train from the direction of Grünstadt has crossed the switch. This means that passengers will have to wait approximately a few minutes before they can disembark after arriving from Eiswoog/Ramsen. Therefore, it is recommended to follow the train crew's instructions to ensure everything runs smoothly.

For everyone for whom the nostalgia day isn't enough, a bonus trip to Bad Dürkheim and on to Neustadt/W is offered on Sunday evening. After the steam train's last evening trip from Eisenberg, which starts at 6:47 p.m., the train will continue as a regular regional train to Bad Dürkheim, where there will be a water stop. The scheduled departure to Neustadt is scheduled for 7:56 p.m.

It is important to note that the historic steam train is not barrier-free and does not allow bicycles to be transported. However, all intermediate stops between Eiswoog and Grünstadt are served and all valid DB and VRN tickets, including the Deutschland Ticket, are valid.
