Four-car crash on BAB 623: traffic stands still for hours!
Saarbrücken is a place full of busy streets and is often affected by unexpected traffic events. On October 21, 2024, a remarkable traffic accident occurred at around 3:50 p.m. on the BAB 623, which led towards Friedrichsthal, about 800 meters before the Herrensohr junction. This incident involved four vehicles traveling one behind the other in a single-lane section of the construction site.
The accident was caused by gridlocked traffic, which forced vehicles to slow to a stop. Unfortunately, the last car in the column, a BMW 3 Series driven by a 27-year-old Frenchman, was unable to stop in time and crashed into the vehicle in front of him. The impact was so violent that the two cars in front of it were pushed into each other. All vehicles involved suffered significant material damage, the extent of which has not yet been determined between those involved in the accident.
Injured people and rescue work
The two drivers, 21 and 52 years old, who were sitting in the middle vehicles suffered minor injuries. They were transported to a hospital in Saarbrücken for further medical care. Fortunately, the 57-year-old driver of the front car and the person who caused the accident were uninjured.
The damage to the BMW that caused the accident and the vehicle immediately in front of it was so severe that both were no longer drivable and had to be removed from the scene of the accident by towing services. Because the accident occurred in the construction area, access for tow trucks was complicated. The tow truck had to maneuver backwards from the nearest junction about 800 meters to the scene of the accident, which took additional time.
Due to the rescue work, the BAB 623 remained completely closed in this section for around three hours. As a result, there were significant traffic disruptions, particularly in the area of Camphauser Straße and Johannisbrücke. The Rodenhof area of Saarbrücken was also affected. Drivers faced longer waits while police and road wardens brought the situation under control.
This type of traffic accident highlighted the challenges that construction zones can pose for road users. Accidents in construction zones are particularly dangerous because the conditions often change abruptly and drivers' attention is required to be greater.
