The 69-year-old driver of the VW made one last attempt to get out of the way, but it failed. The impact was so violent that both vehicles were thrown into the adjacent ditches and came to a stop there. A 68-year-old passenger in the VW was trapped in the accident and had to be freed from her vehicle by the fire department.
Serious injuries and rescue operation
The two drivers, the passenger in the VW and the passenger in the Ford all suffered serious injuries. The arriving rescue workers immediately started treating the injured and took them to nearby hospitals. A rescue helicopter was also called in to provide support to ensure faster medical care.
