Police warn: Harmless Halloween joke can become a crime!
Unna district (ots)
The spooky night of October 31st is approaching, and the typical Halloween scenario will repeat itself in the Unna district! Children and young people go from door to door and excitedly demand trick-or-treating. But be careful! What starts as a harmless prank can turn into serious vandalism in a matter of seconds!
The police are sounding the alarm! Harmless jokes often turn into expensive property damage: people brazenly pour goo into mailboxes and throw raw eggs and paint bombs at doors, cars and windows. Cars that are wrapped in toilet paper or garbage cans that are simply thrown over - the list is long! What many people think is funny is actually nothing less than a punishable offence!
Legal consequences and warning from the police
The careless pranks can quickly turn into a legal nightmare. Damage to public property, such as park benches or bus stops, can result in a prison sentence of up to three years or large fines. Even a threat to win candy could be considered coercion!
The Unna district police authority is increasing its patrol service on Halloween night to prevent such attacks. Parents who are responsible for their children's actions are encouraged to set clear boundaries and discuss the possible consequences of excessive pranks or excessive alcohol consumption. Younger children in particular should only go on their trick-or-treat tour when accompanied by adults!
