J.J. Spaun triumphs at the US Open for the first time – a golf miracle!

J.J. Spaun thrilled the golf world with his triumphant win at the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. The American secured his first major title after finishing the tournament with a total of 279 strokes (1 under par). Spaun remained the only player to stay under par throughout the tournament, missing out by two shots to Robert MacIntyre, who finished in second place with a score of 281 strokes. Spaun's surprise victory also marks the first new champion at a major event since Brian Harman in 2023 at the Open Championship.

The final day initially brought some difficulties for Spaun as he started with five bogeys on the first six holes. Nevertheless, he managed to regain his balance after a weather-related interruption of over an hour and a half. He crowned his victory with a remarkable performance on the final holes, including an impressive 309-yard drive on the 17th hole and a 64½-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Spaun described the experience as “dreamlike, unbelievable.” With this victory he also secured prize money of 4.3 million dollars, which was the biggest financial success of his career.

Development of the tournament in detail

The 2025 US Open proved to be challenging, particularly due to difficult weather conditions and heavy rain, which required a lengthy break in play. Despite this adversity, Spaun was able to stay afloat on the second half of the course by playing three under par. Other notable performances included third place from Viktor Hovland, who finished with 282 strokes, followed by Sam Burns, who had led the tournament at the start of the final day but dropped to seventh due to a mistake on the final holes.

In the final tally, some of golf's best-known names ranked behind Spaun. Rory McIlroy, the Masters winner, finished in 19th place with 287 strokes, while Sepp Straka missed the cut after two poor rounds.

The US Open in a historical context

The US Open is known for its rugged and challenging conditions that bring together the best golfers in the world. Spaun's victory at Oakmont adds to a long list of major golf events that have taken place at this prestigious venue. Historically, Spaun is only the fifth player to birdie the final two holes of a major tournament, highlighting his exceptional performance this weekend. The $21.5 million tournament purse also demonstrates the continued popularity and financial value that the US Open represents in golf.

With this new title, Spaun is sure to continue to make a splash on the PGA Tour and will be one to watch in the coming months as a player who has the potential to win more majors.
