The editor Julia Gerold von Meinverkirk did not use online shopping for a whole year. Your goal: to support the local economy and to live more sustainably. Despite the challenges that local business brings, she documented her orders carefully and found that it was not always easy to do without digital consumption in our digital world. In total, only nine packages arrived at her, looking at it in retrospect that she could have even reduced it to seven. Avoiding online purchases was not only a conscious decision for the environment, but also a step to strengthen regional trade, which Gerold sees as an ongoing struggle for diversity in the city centers, as many opaque factors lead to local business disappearing.
The advantages of waiver are clear: every online order causes between 200 and 400 grams of CO2 emissions that drastically increase in international deliveries. But Gerold also recalled that the offline purchase brings its own challenges: Local prices are often higher and the product selection is limited, which requires extensive planning. Despite the difficulties, the attempt shows that a sustainable lifestyle is possible and that the digital abundance can be reduced.
