China responds to Trump's tariffs

Beijing on Tuesday announced new tariffs on certain American imports, including fuel, and imposed export control measures on several raw materials. These measures are in response to the Trump administration's imposition of 10% tariffs on Chinese imports into the United States.

Details about the new tariffs

The new tariffs were imposed by Chinese Ministry of Finance announced and include a 15% tariff on certain coal and liquefied natural gas and a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, large displacement automobiles and pickup trucks. These measures come into force on February 10th.

New export controls

The Department of Commerce also released a list of new export controls affecting tungsten-related materials typically used in industry and defense. This also includes materials related to tellurium, which can be used to make solar cells.

Beijing's reaction to US tariffs

The announcement comes after sweeping 10% tariffs on Chinese imports into the United States approved by the White House took effect on Saturday. Beijing criticized the tariffs in a statement on Sunday and promised to "strongly stand up for its rights" as well as file a complaint with the World Trade Organization and take "appropriate countermeasures."
