Ticks on the march: This is how the TBE vaccination protects your family!

Ticks on the march: This is how the TBE vaccination protects your family!

The threat from ticks is real: in the coming months, it can be expected that the tick population will increase significantly. This is an alarming message, especially in view of the danger that starts from early summer meningoencephalitis (TBE). The TBE can cause considerable health problems after a tick bite, including meningitis and even life -threatening conditions. According to the Federal Center for Health Enlightenment , the first symptoms such as headaches and fatigue can occur within seven to 14 days after a tick bite, followed by heavy neurological signs.

The TBE is particularly tricky because there is no medication for the disease. The only protection is the vaccination that is recommended from the first year of life and includes basic immunization. As a rule, this vaccination should be refreshed several times to ensure optimal protection, as pediatric and adolescent doctor Kornelia Schwendtner explains. The vaccination costs for adults are over 42 euros, for children almost 48 euros. However, inexpensive vaccination campaigns are offered by certain magistrates or district administration. Also orf oö emphasizes that those who had recently suffered from a flu infection should wait for a period of two to three weeks before vaccination.

The dangers of the ticks

ticks transmit more than 50 different pathogens, including Lyme disease, which, however, must be treated. While not every tick bite has serious consequences, in many cases the TBE can lead to serious complications that can result in aftermath such as concentration disorders or paralysis. Martin Schwarz from the Biology Center Linz emphasizes that the settlement of the ticks depends heavily on the weather and emphasizes that a mild winter has not harmed them. That means: be vigilant, because in moist and warm weather, ticks are particularly active and looking for a host.

The best prevention against TBE remains timely vaccination, especially for people who live or work in risk areas. This includes many parts of Bavaria, where at least one of 100,000 inhabitants has been affected in the past five years. The central point: secure your health and family by timely vaccinations!
