Wolf shot in East Tyrol: population breathes a sigh of relief after the shooting regulations!

In the Tyrolean town of Sillian, a wolf became the target of a controversial shooting ordinance. After several sightings in residential areas of Sillian and Heinfels and the discovery of a dead deer carcass near a residential building, the Tyrolean state government issued the order on February 6, 2025 to kill a risky wolf. The hunters promptly carried out the instructions and the shot was fired on Sunday morning. The killed animal will now be taken to the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) in Innsbruck for examination. The shooting regulations for the affected area were then lifted, as Tirol.gv.at reported.

The deputy state governor, Josef Geisler, commented on the circumstances: "We acted immediately. The shooting regulations were made based on specific incidents in which the animals lost their fear of people." This was a clear signal for quick action to protect the population. In addition to the wolf sightings, the circumstances also indicate an increased potential for conflict with wildlife. The public is still encouraged to report any sightings using a reporting form provided on the state website. Further information can be found at tirol.gv.at.
