Vienna celebrates diversity: Rainbow parade brings color to the city!
On Saturday, June 10, 2025, the Rainbow Parade will take place in Vienna, transforming the city's ring road into a festival site for diversity, solidarity and inclusion. The Vienna lines actively support the LGBTIQ+ community by leading the parade with Pride vehicles. This initiative reflects the company's commitment to supporting the rights of the queer community for many years.
During Pride Month, trams will be decorated with rainbow progressive flags, and WienMobil bikes will be available in the same colors. In particular, 200 WienMobil bikes in rainbow colors will be provided, which can be rented as “Love Bikes” at ten stations in the city center on June 14th. As part of the celebrations, visitors can even enjoy 100 free minutes for WienMobil Rad on the day of the parade using the code “Pride25”.
Your visibility counts!
The campaign “Your visibility counts!” Wiener Linien offers queer people and their supporters a platform to make their messages visible. The first messages can already be seen on social media and digital screens in various subway stations. Slogans such as “Love is colorful” and “be an ally” underline the company’s priority for a respectful society. The subway cube at Karlsplatz also symbolizes solidarity and diversity.
In addition, those interested can purchase a LOVE 3D dice set in the online shop, which serves as both a piece of jewelry and a decorative element. Other Love-themed merchandise, such as socks, posters and notepads, are also available. Alexandra Reinagl, Managing Director of Wiener Linien, emphasizes the importance of diversity and respectful treatment in the company, which employs over 9,500 employees from more than 60 nations.
Global challenges for LGBTIQ+ rights
Although events like the Rainbow Parade create positive visibility, a look at the global situation shows that many LGBTIQ+ people continue to face discrimination and violence. The Amnesty report highlights that in Iraq, for example, a law was passed punishing same-sex relationships with up to 15 years in prison. This is happening in an environment characterized by violence and intimidation by armed groups.
The situation for LGBTI+ people is also becoming increasingly precarious on the African continent. Consensual same-sex sexual acts are criminalized in 31 African countries. In Uganda, an extremely draconian anti-homosexuality law was passed in 2023, which provides for death penalties for “serious homosexuality”. In countries like Ghana and Malawi, discriminatory laws further exacerbate the situation.
In Europe, Hungary’s 2021 “propaganda law” poses a threat to the visibility of LGBTIQ+ issues and drastically limits discussions in schools and media. In Turkey, Pride demonstrations in 2023 were banned and participants were aggressively attacked. This illustrates that despite positive developments in some countries, such as the recognition of same-sex marriage in Greece and legalization in Thailand, the battle for LGBTIQ+ rights worldwide is far from won.
In this area of tension, local initiatives such as those of the Wiener Linien underline the importance of diversity and solidarity. The upcoming celebrations in Vienna offer the opportunity to set an example for acceptance and equality while at the same time drawing attention to the challenges that many LGBTIQ+ people face worldwide.
