Knife attack in Favoriten: Security crisis hits Vienna!

On the night of Sunday, April 13, 2025, an alarming incident occurred in Vienna-Favoriten in which a 42-year-old native of Turkey threatened several passers-by with a knife. The police intervened quickly and were able to arrest the man in Hasengasse. Two police officers were slightly injured during the arrest. These events once again raise questions about the security measures in the Austrian capital, especially with regard to the knife ban zones that have been in place for years.

The FPÖ security spokesman Gernot Darmann was extremely critical of the current security situation and the measures taken by Interior Minister Karner. He described the existing knife ban zones as “bizarre and absurd” and considered them “toothless”. Darmann is calling for urgent reforms, including an immediate ban on asylum and the deportation of people who abuse Austria's hospitality. “The differences of opinion about how to deal with crime have long since become an unbearable permanent situation,” continued Darmann.

Criticism of the tolerance policy

In his remarks, Darmann not only criticized the inaction of the governing parties ÖVP, SPÖ, Greens and Neos, but also the supposed “show politics” of Interior Minister Karner. According to Darmann, it is contradictory that the surveillance of good citizens and taxpayers should be intensified while at the same time “illegal immigrants” come to Austria unhindered. This topic is in the context of current discussions about crime and security in society.

The police crime statistics (PKS) provide a framework for better understanding the developments in criminal activity in Austria. These statistics, which are based on the Austrian Criminal Code, record reported cases and support the planning of strategic criminological measures. Since 2001, all cases have been registered electronically, which enables a more precise analysis of crime developments. The PKS also takes into account the reporting behavior of the population and the intensity of police controls.

The security reports, prepared by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and the Federal Ministry of Justice (BMJ), provide information about the PCS and criminal policy developments. The last update of the PKS data is from August 9, 2024 and makes it clear that the security situation remains a central issue in the political discussion in Austria, especially in view of the current incidents and the demands of the opposition.
