Climate fighter on the roadblock: Hupeny to the collision!

In a dramatic campaign, climate activists from the organizations "Extinction Rebellion" and "Last generation" paralyzed traffic on Wiener Strasse on Monday morning. According to reports, a drivers honked the protesting activists, which led to a collision in which a man and a woman suffered several bruises. A video of the incident attracted special attention and shows the explosive situation during the protest. Criminal proceedings against the driver have already been initiated, and in the event of a conviction, he threatens up to one year in prison, as reported.

The climate activists vehemently campaign for faster measures against climate change and see themselves as part of a more comprehensive movement that pursues different methods and goals. According to swp.de “Fridays for Future” has become more important in recent years by drawing attention to famous paintings or blocking roads through creative actions such as throwing food. The members of these movements are mostly young people who use radical methods for a drastic turn in climate policy and make demands such as a speed limit on motorways or the immediate compliance with the 1.5-degree goal.

The actions that often come across violent reactions in public show the increasing urgency and frustration about slow progress in climate policy. While the groups of some are considered an important voice for the environment, there are also numerous critics who find their methods too extreme. These tensions between activists and society shed light on the complex dynamics in the fight against climate change and the different approaches with which the actors try to make their message heard.
