Massive protests in Tehran after the murder of a student: authorities order an investigation. Focus on security at universities.

Violent protests after the murder of students shake Tehran!

There are currently massive protests in the Iranian capital Tehran, triggered by the violent death of a 19-year-old student, Amir Mohammad Khaleghi. The young man was stabbed to death in front of his dormitory on Wednesday by two unknown perpetrators who stole his backpack. Despite immediate medical attention, Khaleghi died shortly afterwards in hospital. This led to considerable uproar among students and a demonstration in which dozens of students demanded greater security at the university and loudly denounced the authorities. “Shame on you,” chanted the protesters, who also complained about regular attacks in the area. Police responded by sending security guards to the dorm doors, as seen on social media, reports said AP News.

Arrests and investigations

The Iranian judiciary has now arrested several suspects and will interrogate them, as judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir announced on state television. Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. The Minister of Science, Hossein Simaei Sarraf, also firmly rejected reports of arrests of students after the protests and dismissed the head of the dormitory administration. The incident is particularly explosive because it brings back memories of the massive protests in Iran following the death in 2022 of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, who died after being arrested by moral police and sparked nationwide unrest, such as the crown reported.

Those taking part in the protests are not only demanding more security, but are also showing deeper dissatisfaction with the general living situation in Iran, which is characterized by economic sanctions and mismanagement. Despite the fact that the current protests are not politically motivated, there is a risk that they could act as a catalyst for broader unrest as Iranian society struggles with daily challenges.
