Woman stabbed in Vienna-Alsergrund – violence in front of the restaurant!

A devastating incident occurred in Vienna-Alsergrund on April 13, 2025, around 5:30 a.m.: A woman was found with serious stab wounds near a bar on Spittelauer Lände. Despite the injuries, which were primarily concentrated in the shoulder area, her wounds were determined not to be life-threatening. A professional rescue team immediately took the injured woman to hospital, where she was treated.

The police are currently investigating and have already interviewed witnesses. It is a fugitive perpetrator who has not yet been identified. The victim reportedly behaved aggressively and uncooperatively during initial contact with officers, further complicating the investigation. The police have asked for tips from the public, which can be submitted anonymously and either to any police station or directly to the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, Mitte branch, on 01-31310-43800. Vienna.at also reports another violent incident on the same weekend in Neilreichgasse in Favoriten, where a 23-year-old stabbed a roommate with a kitchen knife during an argument.

Background to knife attacks

The increase in violent attacks, especially knife attacks, is a serious problem in Austrian society. In recent years, the number of reported violent crimes involving stabbing weapons has risen continuously. In 2013, 1,524 acts were reported, while 2,393 violent attacks were recorded in 2022, according to the latest data from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK). These developments have also led to political reactions. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) plans to issue a general ban on weapons in public spaces. Regulations are planned that could prohibit the carrying of certain knives.

Weapons ban zones currently exist in Vienna, particularly at the Praterstern, and in two zones in Innsbruck. These measures are intended to counteract the increase in knife attacks and increase the safety of citizens. MyDistrict.at and Vienna.at report on these worrying developments and the need for measures to improve public safety.
