FPÖ rages over new ORF broadcast: propaganda or necessary discourse?

The new ORF program “Concern: us – reports without filters” started on March 30, 2025. This program offers a platform to examine opportunities and challenges in a society characterized by migration and is broadcast every Saturday at 1:20 p.m. on ORF 2 and Wednesday at 10:45 p.m. on ORF 1. According to the magazine's editor-in-chief Lisa Totzauer, the editorial team attaches particular importance to journalistic responsibility in times of social polarization.

The first issue deals with the highly controversial topic of deportations and asks the fundamental question: “Who can stay and who has to go?” In this context, FPÖ media spokesman Christian Hafenecker sharply criticized the program and described it as a “new piece of propaganda”. He accuses the ORF of wanting to lecture the population about the issue of “multiculturalism” and illegal mass immigration.

Criticism of the FPÖ and demands for reforms

Hafenecker even speaks of “FPÖ bashing” and criticizes the negative framing of the term “remigration”. He also expresses concerns about the ORF's collaboration with the private association DÖW, which is perceived as a “right-wing extremist promoter”. Hafenecker therefore demands that the ORF should also speak to Austrian victims of the “multicultural madness” in order to enable a more balanced discussion.

In addition, the FPÖ is demanding a comprehensive reform of the ORF in the direction of a streamlined basic broadcasting and is vehemently against the “compulsory tax” that is levied to finance public broadcasting. These statements cast a shadow on the planned content of the program and the intention behind the ORF's journalistic approach.

Social context and challenges

In a broader social context, it is clear that the topic of migration repeatedly leads to heated debates in many European countries such as Austria. According to various studies, public opinion is often divided. The challenge is to take into account both the needs of migrants and the concerns of the local population and to find a respectful dialogue.

With its empathetic and differentiated approach, the show aims to help promote this discussion and create a space for different perspectives. The challenge, however, is to dissuade critics like Hafenecker from their point of view and to ensure balanced reporting.
