The Russo brothers take us into the world of robot wars!

In the upcoming Netflix film “The Electric State” from the Russo brothers, of “Avengers: Endgame” fame, fantasy and technology merge in an alternative version of the 90s. In this dystopian world, self-aware robots that were once obedient are claiming their place in society. Led by young Michelle, played byMillie Bobby Brown, and the ex-soldier Keats, portrayed byChris Pratt, the story is marked by a dangerous adventure as they search for Michelle's missing brother. How crown reports, Michelle finds a robot who believes her brother's soul is trapped inside him. This mission revolves around questions of identity and humanity, while a brutal war between humans and robots rages in the background.

The film's visual style is loosely based on the acclaimed graphic novel bySimon Stålenhag. The role of the robot-specific main characterKid Cosmois embodied by an almost surreally shaped, oversized robot head that looks cute but makes little mechanical sense. As the New York Times explained, the depth of the original falls by the wayside. Instead of focusing on the philosophical questions, the Russo brothers focus on big stars and impressive special effects, which results in the human performance falling behind the technical effects.

In “The Electric State,” desperation and the search for belonging becomes the core of the plot, while the setting shows the decay of a future world. The film version will be released onMarch 14, 2025will be released on Netflix and is expected to appeal to fans of the graphic novel as well as a wider audience, but it remains to be seen to what extent the emotional and philosophical aspects of the original can be brought into the spotlight.
