Brescia in the downward spiral: four points deducted and threatened relegation!

In a dramatic turnaround in the Italian Serie B, the sporting judiciary has decided to temporarily deduct four points from Brescia Calcio. The club is now the third relegated alongside Cosenza and Cittadella. The reason for this difficult step is tax inconsistencies in salaries in February, reported laola1.at.

Due to the points deduction, Brescia slips into a relegation zone, which means a happy ending for Frosinone Calcio as they now move to 15th place and are saved from relegation. Salernitana and Sampdoria also benefit and now hold a place in the relegation game. Brescia plans to appeal the ruling, which is scheduled for June 12. If the appeal fails, the only option left for the club is to go to the international sports court.

Playouts and possible changes

Serie B faces further challenges as the league has scheduled playouts for June 15th and 20th, between Salernitana and Sampdoria. Interestingly, if the appeal is successful, Brescia could compete with 21 teams next season. The situation is further complicated by the bans that President Massimo Cellino and CEO Edoardo Cellino each received for six months.

In a broader context, Italian football is currently facing a massive betting scandal that may have far-reaching consequences. Numerous players, including Sandro Tonali, Nicolò Fagioli, and Nicolò Zaniolo, are involved in the investigation. Fagioli in particular suffers from gambling addiction and was given a seven-month ban and a €12,500 fine for making illegal sports bets. He is cooperating with the judiciary and asserts that he did not bet on his own team's games.

Tonali has admitted his mistakes and plans to seek psychological support, while Zaniolo has firmly denied the allegations. Another player, Leonardo Bonucci, is also under investigation because he communicated with Fagioli in chat messages about sports betting. The investigation into embezzlement in the sports betting industry could massively damage the image of Italian football, similar to previous betting scandals in the past.

The Italian justice system now has 60 days to complete the investigation and Fabrizio Corona, a former paparazzo, has announced that further revelations will be made, which could further aggravate the situation for the players involved, such as watson.ch reported.
