Vienna relies on climate-friendly construction sites – electrical equipment in use!
In the heart of Vienna, innovative steps are being taken towards a CO2-neutral construction site. The starting signal for a groundbreaking pilot project was given on March 8, 2025, in which PORR is working on two construction sites in Vienna's 14th district on behalf of the City of Vienna. The water pipes will be re-laid over a distance of around 400 meters, using only electrically powered construction equipment. These environmentally friendly measures are intended to provide valuable insights for research into CO2-neutral construction sites, as recorded by the Vienna University of Technology. The first results are expected when the first construction site is completed at the end of May. Climate protection city councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasized: “Climate protection is human protection”.
Sustainable technologies in use
To reduce CO2 emissions, electric excavators, vibratory rollers and other electric vehicles are used on construction sites. Residents benefit from lower noise emissions, while the containers are powered by green electricity. The materials are transported using environmentally friendly trucks that emit up to 90% less CO2 compared to conventional diesel. The CEO of PORR, Karl-Heinz Strauss, describes the use of alternative energies as a decisive lever for reducing emissions on construction sites. In collaboration with the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, the suitability of the electrical devices for construction purposes and the opinions of the operating personnel are also scientifically monitored.
And not only that! The City of Vienna provides information about traffic-related construction sites and diversions in the city to ensure that all road users can move forward unhindered. An information platform offers a comprehensive overview of construction sites that are particularly relevant to traffic. This means that the traffic situation remains transparent, which is of great benefit to everyone involved. These advances in the construction industry not only represent a step towards climate goals, but also an opportunity for Vienna's companies to reposition themselves in the international market, as the Vice President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, Margarete Kriz-Zwittkovits, emphasizes. Further information about the construction sites can be found on the City of Vienna website.
