Newly discovered mini dinosaur: Enigma cursor impresses at 64 cm!

Scientists have discovered a new species of dinosaur that has seen the light of day: “Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae”. Measuring just 64 centimeters and 1.8 meters long, it is a small herbivore that lived about 150 million years ago. The discovery took place in the Morrison Formation will take place in the western United States, specifically in Moffat County, Colorado, between 2021 and 2022.

The scientific description of this new genus and species was published by researchers Susannah Maidment and Paul Barrett in 2025. The generic name “Enigmacursor” means something like “enigma runner” and refers to the taxonomic challenges in classification. The specific name honors Molly Borthwick for her financial support in the acquisition of the skeleton, which is temporarily in the Natural History Museum in London is issued.

Features and properties

The Enigma cursor is classified as a small representative of the Neornithischian dinosaurs. It has striking features such as large feet, long limbs and small forearms, which were probably used for feeding. Analysis of the skeleton shows that this dinosaur specimen may not have been fully grown, as evidence of unossified vertebrae was found.

The Morrison Formation, where the Enigma cursor was found, is a significant geologic area spanning several states and known for its fossils. This formation is a remnant of the Late Jurassic and consists mainly of sedimentary rocks that supported a rich ecosystem. The formation's environment varied from fluvial and floodplain environments to wet and dry conditions.

Ecological context

The Morrison Formation was home to numerous species of dinosaurs, including giant sauropods such asApatosaurusandBrachiosaurus, as well as theropods likeCeratosaurusandAllosaurus. The fossil diversity also includes remains of other animals, such as fish, amphibians, turtles, and many plant species, which are of great importance for the reconstruction of the habitats of the time.

Overall, the discovery of Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae provides valuable insights into the early evolution of herbivorous dinosaurs and enriches our understanding of biodiversity during the Upper Jurassic. As research continues, the Morrison Formation remains a hot target for paleontologists and fossil hunters who want to further unravel the mystery of dinosaurs' past. It impressively illustrates how dynamism and diversity came together in a primeval ecosystem.
