Two dozen passengers hospitalized after turbulence on Delta flight

On Wednesday, 25 people aboard a Delta Air Lines flight were taken to the hospital after "severe turbulence" required the plane, traveling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, to make an emergency landing in Minneapolis, the airline said in a statement.

Safe emergency landing in Minneapolis

Delta said flight DL56 landed safely at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. Upon arrival, the plane was met by medical teams. The 25 people on board were taken to nearby hospitals “for evaluation and care,” Delta’s statement said.

Turbulence leads to injuries

The flight landed around 7:25 p.m. local time. An airport spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the flight was diverted due to turbulence, which resulted in injuries on board. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport Fire Department and paramedics arrived at the gate to provide medical assistance to passengers in need before some were taken to the hospital.

Flight abnormality data

“We are grateful for the support of all emergency responders involved in the operation,” Delta said. According to data from the flight tracking site Flightradar24 The flight climbed more than 1,000 feet in less than 30 seconds about 40 minutes after takeoff. The plane then fell approximately 1,350 feet over the next 30 seconds, the data shows.

Change of course and further information

Shortly thereafter, the aircraft changed direction north toward Minneapolis, where it landed safely about an hour and a half later. CNN has reached out to Delta and the Federal Aviation Administration for more information. This story is continually updated.
