Tent fire at the medieval warehouse in Purgstall: 14 injuries!

In the early morning hours of April 18, 2025, a devastating tent fire occurred on a medieval camp site in Purgstall, in which a total of 14 people, including a child, were injured. The exact circumstances and the cause of the fire are currently still unclear. Before the fire brigade arrived, people with their own fire extinguishers were able to control the fire largely. Nevertheless, the affected tent burned down completely.

The Purgstall volunteer fire brigade took over the reversal work and checked the site for possible embers. On the occasion of the numerous injuries, an emergency deployment (NF10 - emergency large) was triggered. In this context, numerous rescue workers from the districts of Scheibbs and Melk as well as an emergency medical vehicle and a coordinator of the rescue control center were sent to support. A total of 15 people received medical care, 14 of them had to be transported to surrounding hospitals.

initial care and rescue measures

A random emergency paramedic initiated the initial care of the injured immediately after the incident. This turned out to be crucial to avoid further complications. The police have started an investigation into the exact cause of the fire and is looking for other witnesses who can provide information about the course of the incident.

The medieval camp on which the fire broke out is part of a historical festival that is visited by many people. Events currently run in various cities in the region, such as the knight tournament for Easter at Rabenstein Castle and the Easter spectacle in Bad Iburg. These festivals attract numerous interested parties every year and offer a diverse range of programs that range from historical representations to market stalls that offer manual products.

The security measures at such festivals are of great importance, especially when many visitors are present. The event in Purgstall underlines the need to check security measures and ensure that all participants are optimally protected in the event of an emergency. The organizers of such leisure events should always make sure that sufficient fire extinguishers and medical staff are available in order to be able to act quickly in the event of an event.

In the coming days, the investigation by the police will continue to clarify the cause of the fire and to implement additional measures for security at future events. The affected communities and the helpers on site show solidarity and support for the injured and their families in this difficult time.
