Microsleep on the A12: Young driver lands between trees!
On May 24, 2025, there was a traffic accident on the A12 Inntalautobahn near Innsbruck that was caused by the driver falling asleep. A 20-year-old Austrian woman was traveling east when she suddenly lost control of her vehicle. Her car came to a stop on its side between trees. Fortunately, the driver appeared to be uninjured and was taken to the Innsbruck Regional Hospital for examination. The damage to the vehicle, however, was significant.
The rescue workers were quickly on site and included an emergency doctor and units from the Innsbruck fire department, which consisted of 13 men from the BFI Innsbruck and 18 men from the FF Völs. The police and ASFINAG were also involved in the operation to clarify the situation and reopen traffic. Such incidents are not uncommon on Austrian roads, as Statistics Austria shows.
More incidents due to microsleep
On the same day there was also a serious accident in which a 30-year-old man was driving his VW in the northern direction of the Inntal motorway. He also stated that he fell asleep while driving and went over the right side of the road. His vehicle crashed into a sign, slid over an embankment and collided with a tree. The driver suffered unspecified injuries and was rescued from his car by the Kramsach fire department before being taken to Kufstein Hospital.
Another serious traffic accident occurred near Innsbruck, where a 20-year-old Austrian woman cut into a car that was already in the roundabout at the Obermarkt in Telfs. A collision was avoided when the other driver braked hard, but the driver lost control of her car, which ultimately hit a 44-year-old pedestrian. The person who caused the accident is also accused of not having a valid driving license. She herself suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the LKH Innsbruck.
The number of road traffic accidents in Austria has increased in recent years due to constant observation and data collection. This data is collected by police authorities and is regularly transmitted to Statistics Austria in order to create a sound basis for accident research and prevention. The Federal Ministry of the Interior is responsible for continuously monitoring accidents and publishes the results both quarterly and annually.
These incidents illustrate the danger of microsleep while driving and how important it is to take regular breaks to ensure your driving ability.
