Serious accident involving electric cars: driver freed from wreckage!

A dramatic accident occurred on the evening of December 3, 2024 on the A2 southern motorway, near the Wiener Neudorf motorway exit in the Mödling district. An electrically powered SUV collided with the rear of a fully electric truck at 5:54 p.m. While the driver of the SUV was seriously injured, the truck driver was uninjured crown as well as MyDistrict report. The rescue workers were alerted immediately, and the driver had already received first aid from the Red Cross before the volunteer fire department arrived.

Rescue operations under high voltage

Due to the special risks when dealing with electric vehicles, the firefighters used hydraulic rescue equipment to open the passenger door of the accident vehicle. Before doing so, however, it was necessary to ensure that the SUV's high-voltage battery was not damaged and that the automatic safety systems, which are activated in the event of an accident, were working. Walter Wistermayer, the operations manager of the Wiener Neudorf fire department, emphasized that “all of the vehicle’s safety devices worked properly, so there was no additional danger to the emergency services.”
After the dangerous situation had been secured, the seriously injured driver was able to be rescued from the wreckage using a spineboard - a special rescue board that is used when spinal injuries are suspected. After the successful rescue, the badly damaged car was transported away by the fire department, while the truck, with its tail lift peeled off but ready to drive, was escorted to the next breakdown bay.

The accident site was heavily contaminated, which required extensive cleaning by ASFINAG and a specialist company. The volunteer fire brigade's operation, which involved a total of 26 members with five vehicles, ended around 7:00 p.m. The exact severity of the driver's injuries and the hospital to which she was taken are currently unknown. This fatal accident casts a shadow over the increasing use of electric vehicles on the road.
