Oil film alerts fire department: Danger from dilapidated cutter in Kiel!

Kiel.An alarming incident has occurred at the Plushowhafen! A 20-meter-long wooden cutter, the “Petrel,” has caused an oil film to spread across the water. The ship has been moored at the old transshipment pier of the former naval air base for months, but on Tuesday at 11 a.m. the oil film was discovered that extended to the entrance to the harbor.

The Kiel fire department was immediately alerted by the water police. The Nordwache fire brigade quickly arrived, supported by the new fire boat “Dat Füüershipp”. A thin film of oil was visible on the water and was spreading threateningly across the fjord. Nearly 30 firefighters were mobilized to bring the situation under control. The fire department had to intervene again on Wednesday because the amount of oil had increased.

Oil pollution caused by “petrel”

The cause of the oil spill was quickly located: the “Petrel” lost oil due to a leak. The investigation into the exact cause is still ongoing, while the Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority is already taking action. The shipping authority has been observing an increasing number of orphaned watercraft in the Pelzowhafen for some time.

The “Stormvogel”, which is based in Maasholm, shows clear signs of needing repairs and may no longer be able to sail under its own power. However, there are no concrete indications that the ship is in danger of sinking. The water police have increased patrols in the area as they work together to find a solution to the threat. Initial considerations are already underway as to how the “Petrel” can be recovered before winter.
